The timeline can be a nice tool to see what is happening, but sometimes it is too verbose. What content are you most interested in, what content couldn't you care less about? Let me know :-)

yep, it's not nice to see the start page being flooded with super obscure artists / albums nobody cares about. would be great if you could implement options with the purpose to narrow down the display according to the user's preference. f.e. only albums which have got attention by a user in one way or another, or albums with an attached blurb or review aso aso ...

^ yes, obviously users have different preferences/expectations. I think the default setting should be quite restrictive, focusing on the more relevant actions and events, then individual users can add the "clutter" back in.

Currently I've hidden all artist/release additions and also simple tag/rating assignments. So there's still video additions, reviews/blurbs, status changes (e.g. putting a release on your wishlist) and of course playlist entries.

Was going to ask if it's potentially worth making an exception (or having an option) to display simple ratings given to new releases, but I suppose in most cases that would also be picked up by registering a playlist entry at the same time? Just thinking sometimes its nice to see the immediate reactions to a new release. Also perhaps like other parts of the site, a filter for prog/non-prog?

^ The problem with showing simple ratings is that sometimes people go on a "rating spree" - I often go through my collection and re-rate releases, and when you're voting on a poll you typically always make frequent adjustments. So how could we filter ratings so that we see some, but not too many? Still thinking about it. But yes, when you register a playlist entry your rating will always be shown as well. About the prog/non-prog filter: I have been avoiding that for the general timeline so far - but maybe I should just add it for consistency, and to make sure that new users don't see too much non-prog content unless they opt-in.

How easy would it be to code it only to show new ratings rather than adjusted ones? I suppose it is quite specific but I am thinking of those new-ish releases and that initial run of many listens/ratings they get from your active users. Guess its a bit of an extension of the 'most played' column on the home page. ...I'm also aware I'm writing this at exactly the same time as doing a rating spree of my own, adding everything I listened to yesterday ;-)

^ That would be easy, but sometimes there are rating sprees with new ratings as well, especially when new users (rare as they are right now) rate their collection. I somehow need to find a new approach to the timeline which makes sure that entries are limited in a "per user per day" metric.

That's fair - at some point I'll be doing that sort of spree of my own with the roughly 1500 albums I've rated elsewhere... mainly so the recommended releases bar you've excellently set up is a bit more useful for me rather than recommending everything I already have but just haven't rated here! |
