Topic: Progfreak.com becomes TagYourMusic.org ...

I thought long and hard about this, but I think it's the right decision. Neither of these domain names are really good in my opinion, but nowadays it is really difficult to find good domain names that are still available (and not extremely expensive to buy).

Sure, TagYourMusic sounds a lot like RateYourMusic. But frankly, this website is all about tagging your music. And even though RYM and TYM share many features, I've developed my website independently. Back in the late 2000s, when I was building things like the playlist, the collection/wishlist/etc. release status values, I didn't even visit RYM all that much. I knew that it existed, and I knew that it would never be possible to catch up to them in terms of size and user count.

Well, anyway ... what do you think about the change? Good, bad, or something in between? Please let me know, either here or in a PM (feedback form).

Sincerely, Mike, I believe that was a bad choice. At least to me, Progfreak was a brandname. And it was an excellent, unique name as opposed to this one, which ACTUALLY sounds like a "Rate Your Music" copycat.

Thanks for the feedback, Svetonio! I agree that Progfreak was unique and cool. Unfortunately, except for a handful of users (who I am really glad for), nobody was using it. TYM actually conveys what the website is all about, and even though RYM is a huge website, the question is who copied whom - we started around the same time.

Maybe I will find a better name in the future …

To all of you who loved the Progfreak brand: I’ve thought of a way to keep it alive. Stay tuned … :)

I mean, Mike, not to be rude, but implying that RYM copied Progfreak is a bit ludicrous, honestly, and RYM started six years before Progfreak. But like the others, I definitely agree that this new name is too unoriginal and the "coincidence" may not be as coincidental as you're trying to have use believe. I mean if you feel retiring the brand name "progfreak" and using something new may attract new users, that's fair; but the problem isn't that "Progfreak" was that good (which it was), it's that the new name is really not that good. Frankly, I think "Rate Your Music" was never a good name (and actually turned me off of the site for years), and "Tag Your Music" is not any better.

Sorry if this came off as abrasive, but I'm just being honest.

Also, how does the profile picture in this forum work? lol

Is it the most recently rated album?

Edit: it can't be because Master of Puppets is my most recently rated lmao

It's currently the last album you listened to. It was just a quick fix to have something as an avatar. I guess forum users will insist on their own image. Automatically generated stuff is better suited as a signature, because that also gives more space to explain what it is ;-)

I don't think I've said that (EDIT: Actually I kind of did, in the post above - should have worded it differently). When I started PF, RYM was already up and running, but it looked quite different than it does today. What I am saying is that I've always developed PF independently, I never looked at RYM for inspiration. We came up with similar features, but also with distinct differences, particularly in the way the music is tagged.

But like the others, I definitely agree that this new name is too unoriginal and the "coincidence" may not be as coincidental as you're trying to have use believe.

Of course it's not coincidental at all. I might not stick with tagyourmusic.org, given all the resentment, but the name does express exactly what I think this website should be about. It is the tagging of the music you are listening to.

I kind of agree. Even though "rate/tag your music" expresses what I like to do most here, it may not be the top interest of most users. As silly puppy said at PA, he never rates/tags anything without also reviewing it.

How about progressivemusic.org? Too ambitious? ;-)

Mike, don't lose your way concerning the domain name. Can't imagine another better title yet.

ProgFreak is (was) a familiar one, okay, that's true, speaks for itself. The new name is beneficial anyhow, while directly pointing to the multi-tagging facility, missed on progarchives for example. Hopefully you'll find a synergy solution.

Moreover, although still in process, I'd like to emphasize the fantastic implementations concerning the relaunch. Congrats!

^ Thank you for the encouragement! I will definitely keep the TYM domain for a while and see how it turns out.

One idea for Progfreak is to have a few specialized domains and create websites there which display a portion of the TYM database in unique ways. For example, at progfreak.com there could be a gallery of prog freaks (users who love prog). And it could say "Progfreak.com, powered by TYM".

I'll admit I'm not a big fan of the name change either, but that is fairly irrelevant.

I'm not really a big fan of rating music for that matter, but I do like keeping records of what I have listened to, and have been using Progfreak for a long, long time to track what I am listening to, so I thank you Mike for giving me a place to do this. I find my ratings to be pretty meaningless, but I do like being able to review my list at the end of the year to see what I've ranked in my top 20 for the collaborator list on PA. I find as I review it that there are albums that I rated lower that I like better than albums that I have rated higher, but it at least gives me a tool that I can use to provide a top 20 list. I do hope that you can get more users on the site. It was kind of sad, seeing myself with the last 100 albums played on a fairly regular basis.

Well, thank you a lot for "keeping the faith" all those years! In the last couple of weeks I've gotten back into the habit of listening and rating new releases again, and maybe one day I'll come close to the number of albums you are listening to.

As I've said elsewhere, a little goes a long way when it comes to community. I'll keep up the activity, so you're not alone on the timeline anymore, and there's a few people who are contributing again on a low level. In the coming weeks I'll overhaul the system, making small tweaks to improve usability and performance. With any luck, after the summer I'll be more confident to ping all the former heavy users, maybe we can start up things again with a mix of old and new blood :-)

Let me know what you need when it comes to managing releases ... you can already use it to adjust ratings, but with a collection that big you might need more/different filters. I can also build a snippet for the top 20 list ...

I actually like the idea of a changing profile picture like this, actually. One suggestion is to keep the image there even after the user listens to new music, so we know what their most recently listened to album was at the time that they posted here. So today, it's CCR's Cosmo's Factory, this post I'm typing now will forever be bare the Cosmo's Factory album art, but since tomorrow I'll be listening to Avenged Sevenfold's Life is But a Dream, whatever post I make tomorrow (I'll find something just to follow through lmao) will forever bare the Life is But a Dream album art.

I would like to go back into my habit of listening to music regularly, but unfortunately I have medical issue with ym ear at the moment and my doctor doesn't want me wearing headphones at all during the next few months. So I guess I won't be listening to stuff for a while heh

Also, what happened to the "Collection" tab. That was like the most useful page on the site imo

Edit: I found it under releases, but I miss the ability to sort the collection alphabetically, with the cover art. I think the old collection tab should return - that was a huge draw for me to the site.

Good suggestion about pinning the cover art to the post. Ultimately this would be something to be configured by the user in the settings.

Sorry to hear about your ear ...

And sorry about disappearing that collection tab - I'll reinstate a similar view under releases soon, with dramatically improved performance.

"Tag Your Music" should probably remain as a subheading, I mean under "Progfreak.org" on the front page, but there is no doubt that an unique name as "Progfreak" should definitely be resurrected.
