As you probably noticed, today we changed the rating color scheme. Previously (basically since the website was created around 2008) green meant good, red meant bad. Nowadays websites like tiermaker have established a different system where red means good (as in "hot") and green/blue means bad (as in "cold"). We're going with the flow ...

What do you think?

I noticed that 10s are missing.

Thanks for letting me know! They're not missing, but they have the wrong color. Working on a fix ...

Fixed.

I might be a slightly more youthful type than some prog heads but even I still find red (bad) to green (good) more logical.

Although - this doesn't apply to me - is it partly because avoiding shades of red and green is more accessible for colour blindness?

I'm sure I'll get used to it!

^ Of course I would never rely on color alone to signify anything. Not sure about the new color scheme, I find it hard to get used to myself. :-)

I'll admit that at the moment my eye is now naturally drawn to "Decent" as being the best...

Maybe something similar to the colour temperature scale which is just different strengths of blue and red - strong shades at either end of the scale and almost white in the middle?

^ Yes, maybe we can find a new way that's different to (and not just the opposite of) the tiermaker style.

I'll try out something tomorrow, stay tuned! And thanks for your feedback :-)

Well, today I introduced a monochrome color scheme. Colors range from grey (bad) to golden yellow (supreme). What do you think? I was getting annoyed by all the different colors :-)

please don't change every once a month, needs time, no further comment for now, apart from that, we have to take the things as they come :-)

^ Yes, sorry for the rapid changes. I just wasn't happy at all with the recent change, so I needed to do something. :-)

One last change - yesterday I made all the ratings yellow/golden, which is something we used to have on the ancient version of the website (progfreak). Didn't work for me at all, so now I am switching to blue, and I'm preparing a chooser to enable you to switch between rating color themes. There's no one size fits all solution, but having it monochrome in the same blue as the website looks quite good and should be a nice default setting.

Other themes to choose from (in the future):

  • monochrome green
  • monochrome red
  • monochrome yellow
  • green to red
  • red to green

last modification (including shade) looks surprisingly good!

^ Yes, it blends more into the general look and feel of the website. Will tune it a little bit though (there should be a bigger difference between B and A).

the way it was before was better. higher rating = green lower rating = red

I will make it configurable, so everyone can select a scheme they are comfortable with. Bear with me for a couple of days ...

So today I changed to rating stars again. I first did this in the PA forum export code for the polls about a week ago, and I think it looks really great. First I used five stars, but it felt wrong to map the seven tiers - so now we are using a seven star visualisation of the seven tiers. Let me know what you think!

Will be honest, I don't like the stars, I don't think its particularly intuitive to a new visitor, the S-A-B-C-D etc scheme works far better in my view. Too open to interpretation as well really, as its not immediately obvious what "qualifies" as a 5 out of 7 star for example. Also seems to clutter a page, the timeline for example has a LOT of stars on screen. If others prefer it then fair enough but can't say its for me. It is at least better than the PA 5 star scheme though ;-)

I like the stars, and I think they are more intuitive for new visitors than the tiers. But I know that people are different, so I'll still look into making the rating visualisation configurable somehow. I agree about the timeline, I need to "de-clutter" it somehow.

Always the trouble with subjectivity, we're all a bit different! :-)

I'll admit its not growing on me, but nor would it stop me using the site!
