Just a general comment to see if anyone else feels the same... By this time in 2024 and 2025 I think I'd already found a fair few repeat-listen albums and was thinking both were great years for music. This year, particularly on the prog scene, thus far it's a whole lot of "meh". Ok, but very little has blown me away including Big Big Train's effort which I had high hopes for. A few things in the queue though that hopefully change that.

"Meh", you say? Bold take in a year where a classic band like Gong have dropped something far more "wow" than "meh", Textures are stomping about with a cracking new album, and Tatsu Akiba’s sophomore release is an absolute treat, not to mention a clutch of excellent debut prog records already. Rather more "blimey" than "meh", I'd say. 😏

Admittedly I haven't got to Gong's new one yet, but it is only a few days old. Textures sit in a pocket of music I tend to take a hard pass on so meh by default. Tatsu Akiba's a new one on me so will check him out, thanks for the recommendation. And will look out for these mystery debuts.

Give it some time. I'm not listening to much new music this year, too many other things going on. But a couple of good releases are coming up soon. Quality over quantity :-)

Yeah, this year has been really slow so far across all genres, not just prog. Haven't listened to much relative to other years at this point, either. I was just thinking about this tbh The video game scene has also been sluggish this year. But it's been a solid year for anime syncopation, at least, so that's what I've been watching.

Think that's nailed the issue for me, my quantity consumed is lower and yet to hear much quality within that :D Hopefully some nice surprises soon.

Well this certainly was a surprise from left field. https://neurosis.bandcamp.com/album/an-undying-love-for-a-burning-world How the hell did i not hear about this until a week after its release?

listening to it now... it's actually kind of good. much better than i thought it would be. but it, too, suffers from loudness fatigue. is it really that hard to ask for an album that is both good and not mastered too loud this year? i guess not :/ mastered by the same guy who did Pelican last year. it's not as bad as last year's Pelican release, but it still needs to be toned down a few notches. It's more or less on level with 1999's Times of Grace, master-wise. (also sounds like this is the era they're harkening back to, though I can hear some Isis, specifically Celestial, in this as well with Aaron Turner taking on vocal and guitar duties). the title is way too on the nose for it to have been coincidental, and idk how i feel about that tbh.

Even an excellent revival album is being released these days – the band's previous, debut album was released back in 2011: https://thedarkershore.bandcamp.com/album/further-regions

^ Again you'll avoid using this website's means of promoting releases as much as possible. Nice! You are possibly the biggest narcissist on the internet! :-)

I have to apologize for something else here, Mike. The aforementioned debut album "Reshaping" by Polish jazz-rock group HOIST was released in late 2025 (although it remains a great debut to check out, really). Sorry, eh. Here's the correct link to the (also) awesome jazz-rock debut, released a few days ago: https://hypofiztrio.bandcamp.com/album/exode

Please, Mike, add these two YT clips to the HYPOFIZ TRIO page, 'cause I don't know how to do it myself:

^ You can add youtube links to any release yourself - just go to the release page and look for the "add" link underneath the cover art, where all the external links are listed.
