Topic: Guidelines for scoring various tags

I'd like to hear some thoughts on how to assign numerical values to the various tags.

I think we're all accustomed to assigning an overall rating for a recording, and the site also gives us some guidance with suggested definitions for numeric ranges:

  • Masterpiece 9.6+
  • Awesome 8.6+
  • Great 7.6+
  • Good 6.1+
  • Mediocre 4.1+
  • Bad 0+

I think we can apply this same range to things like "songwriting" and "cover art", too.

But how do we decide on a numeric value for tags like "Prog" or "Electronic"? For those that are genres, I think it could mean "how close is this to being a precise example of the genre?", or "taken as a representative of this genre, how high is its quality?"

Some of these things seem more like they should be binary yes/no, like clean or growling vocals, or twin leads.

Anybody have a system for coming up with these numbers? Or am I overthinking the whole thing?

Yes, I should be more clear on that. The general rule has been that all the non-rating tags have a scale from 0 to 10, where anything from and including 6 means that the tag is "enabled" (in a boolean off/on sense). For some of the tags it does not make sense to make any further distinctions, but for many this scheme is applied:

  • 10: "Extremely"
  • 8+: "Very"
  • 6+: "-" (just "enabled") *4+: "Moderately"
  • 2++: "Slightly" *0+: "Not"

So for example a level 4 for "quirky" would mean "moderately quirky".
