François Thollot

Contact 2002

A Energetic Prog Chamber Jazz-Fusion/Zeuhl (few plays)

"While I have in the past found One Shot's output to be a bit hit and miss, there's no doubting the individual talents of their members, and so Francois Thollot being joined by two of them for this album is certainly a positive. Perhaps Thollot's composition and arrangement talents are what One Shot are missing, as this is a great album. In terms of tone, it's not at the truly menacing end of Zeuhl, but still retains a recognisably dark feel while being relatively fast paced energetic jazz-rock. Everything is angular, but not overly avant-garde, and a previous reviewer is bang on in reflecting that Thollot's guitar work makes you think of what would happen if Robert Fripp played Zeuhl. As an instrumental trio, the recording feels 'live', giving it a chamber rock vibe too.

The great interplay between the trio is evident in the first three tracks, while Etude Plombee and Blues du Crabe showcase the best of Philippe Bussonnet's bass work."
