"If you are the kind of person who thinks that girls can't rock, well, then the title of this album is pretty much the response I would give you.
Frinted by female vocalist Charlie Forsberg, Norwegian hard rockers Citizen Charlie deliver no-frills hard rock, and not compromises have been made at any point. The tracks are straightforward, featuring a pumping bass, thumping drums, and classic-styled heavy rocking guitar riffs. Forsberg's vocals have a quality of clarity to them, but they are raw and unpolished and kinda punky, providing 75% of the fuck-you attitude that characterizes this album. The music is a hundred percent accessible, and amidst all the hard rocking attitude, you do find a lot of melody, and most of the guitar solos are just the way they should be: not too shreddy, but still revealing that Ola Hakon Svendsen and Niko Grasaasen definitely know their way around the fretboard of a guitar.
Inspired by the likes of AC/DC and early Aerosmith - and neatly avoiding the hair metal sleaze that colonized hard rock in the 80s -, Citizen Charlie's "Up Yours" is all rock 'n' roll, and builds directly on the legacy of the great heavy rock acts of the 70s.
Fans of edgy hard rock with loads of attitude should definitely check out Citizen Charlie's "Up Yours"... misogynists beware, though, you will probably be scared shitless by Charlie Forsberg's empowered and empowering lyrics.
